Maren's Zipper

While teaching the Sunbeam class yesterday the two boys in the class started to do the potty dance. I was by myself and so I gathered up all seven of them to take a field trip to the bathroom. Just as I opened the door to head out, Randy walked by with Maren. I handed the two boys over to Randy and grabbed Maren and asked, "Who wants to play with a baby?" Only 3 and 4-year-old-girls were left and a chorus of "oohs and ahhs" rang out.

Maren loved every second of it. She loves kids. They touched her feet and her hands, cooed at her and talked about how cute she was. Maren just stared back at them with her big goofy two-tooth-grin and let out an occasional burst of laughter. Maren was wearing a sundress and it didn't take long for the girls to notice her scar. One kind of gasped and said, "Oh, she has an owey." I told them it was her zipper. A couple of the girls pulled at the necks of their dresses and looked down at their chests, "why does she have a zipper?" I told them when she was born her heart was sick so the doctors gave her a zipper so they could open it and fix it. When they were done, they zipped her back up.

They all just kind of stared at me with furrowed brows. One girl finally said casually, "Oh, that happened to me when I was a baby but my zipper is gone now."
